Coming off its final bye of the regular season and desperate for a win, the University at Albany men's basketball team escaped by the skin of its teeth Saturday evening on the road against America East cellar dweller Binghamton.

UAlbany spent more than 38 minutes in the lead at Vestal's Dr. Bai Lee Court and was up by as many as 12 at the midway point of the second half, but had to overcome its own mistakes and a late Binghamton charge to escape with a 77-74 win.

Amir Lindsey scored a game-high 23 points and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line to lead the Great Danes, who improved to 9-17 overall and 5-6 in America East play, staying a game back of UMass Lowell in the race for fourth place in the conference.

All five UAlbany starters scored in double figures in a game where head coach Dwayne Killings used a six-man rotation almost exclusively. A seventh player, Miles Rose, got just two minutes of action in the first half.

Okechukwu Okeke added 15 points and 10 rebounds for UAlbany, which also got 13 points from Tarique Foster, 12 points from Isaac Abidde and 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from Jaden Kempson.

The Great Danes spent most of the game a couple possessions ahead of the Bearcats (5-22, 1-11), though the Bearcats were consistently able to chop into UAlbany's lead when it looked as if things were about to open up.

After UAlbany went up 65-53 with 9:47 to play, Binghamton reeled off a 9-0 run to make it a three-point game.

The Great Danes responded in the final minutes, eventually pushing the lead to 74-66 on a couple of Lindsey free throws with 53 seconds left, but Kempson and Ma'Kye Taylor combined to miss three of their next four attempts at the free throw line as Binghamton used an 8-1 flurry to get within 75-74 on a Jackson Benigni 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds left.

Lindsey made it a 77-74 game with a pair of free throws, and the Great Danes defended brilliantly on the game's final possession, forcing Jeremiah Quigley into a double-clutch 3-pointer that didn't get remotely close to the basket.

Wes Peterson led Binghamton with 18 points, to go along with 16 points from Benigni and 14 from Quigley.

UAlbany will continue its three-game road trip this coming week against the America East's top two teams, visiting NJIT on Thursday and UMBC on Saturday.
