Talk about putting your money where your mouth is. New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough organized group workouts for many of his wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs in San Diego -- led by none other than Drew Brees. Shough covered travel and lodging to get his guys out to the West Coast for several days of throwing sessions with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time directing them. That isn't easy on the second year of a rookie contract valued at a fraction of what the NFL's best passers make, but Shough is confident the results will justify it. Count Brees among those impressed.
"This is all Tyler," Brees told the Times-Picayune/NOLA.com's Jeff Duncan. "This is the most important time of the year. The work and camaraderie you build during the offseason can be what separates them from other teams this season."
And look at who joined him. It's not just familiar faces like Chris Olave and Juwan Johnson, but new arrivals including highly-paid running back Travis Etienne Jr. and veteran tight end Noah Fant. Rookie draft picks Oscar Delp, Bryce Lance and Barion Brown were also in attendance, as were many other players who will be competing at training camp next month. It's a good group to get together, and they're sure to learn a lot from Brees (as well as his old teammate Lance Moore).
Here's an unofficial list of participants from the photos and videos Shough has shared on social media:
One notable absence may be rookie first-round pick Jordyn Tyson, who was held out of spring practices due to a lingering hamstring issue, but just because we haven't seen him yet doesn't mean he isn't there. It's also possible the Saints told him to take it easy until training camp starts so he's fully rested and ready to go. This isn't a complete or official list, but it does a lot to show just how many guys believe in what Shough is trying to build. We'll keep an eye out for more highlights as they come out.
