New Milwaukee Bucks guard and Greenfield native Tyler Herro was in Las Vegas on July 10 to not only catch up with members of his new coaching staff and new teammates, but because his AAU team was in town as well.
Herro officially became a member of the Bucks following a July 6 trade with the Miami Heat, which sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. to Florida while Herro and former Heat teammates Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jacquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakučionis joined him with the Bucks.
While in Las Vegas, the 26-year-old Whitnall High School alumnus spoke to various outlets for the first time about the deal that ended his seven-year stint with the Heat that saw him win the 2022 Sixth Man of the Year award and earn an all-star nod in 2024. (Note: Herro made the rounds with members of the media before news broke of a physical altercation he had with former Miami teammate Bam Adebayo. The Heat had no comment on the altercation and the Bucks did not return a request for comment from the Journal Sentinel.)
Despite his success in Miami, Heat president Pat Riley had been non-committal about giving Herro a contract extension for several years. Herro became eligible for a contract extension on July 1 for as much as $206 million over the next four seasons.“I saw it coming,” Herro told Miami-based reporters in Las Vegas. “If any summer, it was going to be this summer. So I was very anticipating [of] this. Obviously not knowing Milwaukee, but kind of figured I was gonna get traded this summer. I’m excited and happy it’s Milwaukee.”
For the Bucks’ part, GM Jon Horst said the team was intentional about targeting Herro and Jacquez Jr. but wasn’t ready to expound on extension talk for the two eligible players.
“What that looks like in terms of extensions and next moves and things like that, that’s all the work that’s yet to be done,” Horst said in a conference call on July 8.

Herro added he understood the move from Miami’s point of view in acquiring Antetokounmpo to continue to chase a championship and held no ill will toward the organization. He also said he will still call Miami home full-time and that’s where his children will grow up.
During a television interview during the Bucks’ summer-league game against the Heat, Herro added, “I’m super excited to be back home [in Milwaukee]. I feel like a great opportunity for me. The guys that came with me from Miami as well as the young guys we already have on the roster. [Brayden] Burries, [Nate] Ament and obviously the guys that were already on the team, super excited to just get an opportunity to play with these young guys, kind of show them a way, a little bit in a way.
"I’m a vet on this team and I just want to represent the city and the state where I’m from. I’m super excited to be back.”
