The Los Angeles Rams received some criticism for drafting quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. But Simpson is not focused on those outside opinions and is determined to prove the Rams were right for drafting him in the first round.
“I really didn’t care, to be honest with you. Everybody can have an opinion, but it’s my job to take care of my business,” Simpson said at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere, via SI’s Gilberto Manzano. “So, the Rams took me with the 13th overall pick, so now it’s my job to be the best player I can be, the best Ty I can be, and go out there and prove them right. I don’t really listen to all that. My job is to make sure to do whatever my team needs me to do to win and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Simpson will serve as a backup quarterback for defending NFL Most Valuable Player, Matthew Stafford.
The Rams recently signed Stafford to a one-year, $55 million extension. Stafford’s plans after the 2026 season are still up in the air but he is expected to remain the starting quarterback for Los Angeles until he retires.
Simpson said getting the opportunity to learn from veterans like Stafford and wide receivers Davante Adams and Puka Nacua has been a big advantage for him since joining the Rams.
“I think it’s really, really cool to, one, be in the room with Matthew, who has done it at a high level for so long, and then see it from a wide receiver standpoint with Davante and Puka,” Simpson said. “And Davante especially, because of him being similar to Matthew, but I think both of those guys are two guys who are one of the greatest at their positions. The fact that I can watch both of them at the same time on my team, it’s a big advantage for me.”
Stafford and Adams are nearing the end of their careers and could retire after next season if the Rams win the Super Bowl.

But Nacua is still in the early years of his career and could be a long-term star for the Rams. Nacua is due for a contract extension in the near future but the his off-the-field behaviors could impact when and how much the Rams are willing to sign Nacua.
It is expected that the Rams will sign Nacua to a historic contract extension, which means he and Simpson could be working together for many years to come.
