The Los Angeles Rams beat the Kansas City Chiefs by a final score of 20-9 in their first preseason game of 2026, as rookie quarterback Ty Simpson led the way with two touchdown passes to running back Dean Connors. It was a low-scoring affair for about three quarters, until the Rams pulled away after Simpson caught fire in the second half.
Simpson went 21-of-25 for 190 yards, along with those two touchdowns, and no interceptions.
The running back room as a whole looked solid on Saturday, a credit to the blocking of L.A.s third unit offensive line, but it was Simpson and Connors who really put the game out of reach.
Stetson Bennett got the start
Fourth-year quarterback Bennett, vying to prove himself worthy of the backup role behind Matthew Stafford, went 4-6 for 38 yards.
But it was Simpson who starred, as Sean McVay clearly wants to give his rookie ample opportunity to gain experience in an NFL environment. And the results were quite good. Even of the play calling was largely vanilla, Simpson continuously executed and gave his receivers a chance to make plays after the catch, opening up on couple throws late in the game to fellow rookies Max Klare and CJ Daniels.
Simpson looked and played like the best quarterback on the field on Saturday, for the Rams.
Rams defense against KC backups
L.A.’s defense held their ground against Justin Fields and Garrett Nussmeier, holding the Chiefs to a few field goals and keeping Kansas City out of the end zone, with the help of a couple penalties.
The standout of the day was Rams safety Nick Andersen.
The former Wake Forest standout has made a strong case to make L.A.’s final roster as secondary depth and special teams starter.
Speaking of special teams, playoffs scapegoat Xavier Smith had a nice showing in the return game, while Ethan Evans got his punts off without a hitch and Harrison Mevis made his kicks with 2 field goals and 2 extra points.
It’s preseason, so we aren’t seeing best on best, but you can only play who is in front of you, and by the end of the game, the Rams were playing well in front of their opponent. L.A. came away from this game looking good.
They have two more preseason games to tune up, and then it’s the real thing. Always room for improvement, but so far for the Rams and Simpson, so good.
