The NFL draft brings different evaluations of players.
Sometimes the difference in evaluation is quite large, such as with Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. Two analysts I enjoy listening to see Pearce in a much different light. Logan Paulsen, former Redskins tight end and current Commanders analyst and the Sportsocracy's Jeremy Greene come to significantly differing conclusions on Pearce.
Greene last week with Craig Hoffman on the "Take Command" podcast strongly told listeners that the character issues concerning Pearce are largely overblown. Greene then suggested, no, he asserted, that one NFL team has stirred the Pearce pot, in hopes of bringing Pearce down to them in this Thursday night's first round of the 2025 NFL draft. Greene has Pearce as his sixth-ranked player overall in this draft. Meanwhile, Paulsen has ranked Pearce atop his fourth tier of edge rushers.
Monday, Paulsen told Hoffman why he feels so differently regarding Pearce. "Is Pearce a great athlete? Sure. It's also true he is a very specific type of rusher. He is a high rusher, which means he rushes high on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle. They really try to win with speed, chasing the arc."
"I think people get so caught up with the 40 time, the twitch, you should, because those are important things for playing the position. But I think there are other players at the position I like more in terms of play style, consistent effort that I want to bet on."
As for the character issues regarding Pearce? Greene said last week that he has researched the accusations and does not find many of them to be true regarding Pearce. In the end, Greene concluded last week that Pearce is immature, probably even entitled. Yet Greene also stressed that the accusations against DE Mike Green are much, much worse than any accusations concerning Pearce.
"Jeremy said he's talked to a bunch of people. I've got to call Jeremy and figure out who he talked to about it. Because almost every person to a man that I've talked to about James (Pearce), has said the staff there is not super stoked about him."
"For whatever that is worth, I trust Jeremy. He does a great job of researching, but I just haven't found those people that he is talking to."
Now, imagine you are a general manager, a defensive/offensive coordinator, a head coach, a scout, and you are hearing very different opinions regarding highly ranked prospects.
What do you believe? Whom do you believe? How do you determine to proceed forward?
