We've officially entered the training camp edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers' countdown to kickoff. With fans needing to wait only 38 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13, we'll take a look at the most recent and best players to ever wear No. 38.

Steelers current No. 38: CB D'Shawn Jamison

Jamison, who signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January 2026, is the current No. 38 wearer on the roster.

Last 5 Steelers to wear No. 38

  • D'Shawn Jamison, 2025-present
  • Cameron McCutcheon, 2025
  • Terrell Edmunds, 2024
  • Mykal Walker, 2023
  • John Simon, 2021

Best No. 38 in Steelers history: RB Sidney Thornton

No. 38 doesn’t necessarily have the storied Steelers history of other jersey numbers, but the best to ever wear it was running back Sidney Thornton.

Thornton, drafted by Pittsburgh with the 48th overall pick in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft, was primarily a backup behind Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris. His best season came in 1979 where he recorded 816 yards from scrimmage and 10 t0tal touchdowns.

During his time with the Steelers, Thornton accumulated 2,027 yards from scrimmage and 24 total touchdowns across 74 games, winning two Super Bowls with Pittsburgh.

An underrated offensive contributor from the greatest era in franchise history, Thornton is the best to ever wear No. 38.
