The Seacoast high school Athletes of the Week for April 27-May 2 are two Spaulding High School students: baseball player Garrett Truax and softball player Megan Uraskevich.
The weekly polls run each Monday through midnight Thursday, and can be found at seacoastonline.com/sports and fosters.com/sports. The honors are presented by York County Community College.
Uraskevich joins previous girls winners this spring: Winnacunnet softball player Lucy Gelbstein and Exeter girls lacrosse player Riley Benevides. Truax joins previous boys winners this spring: Winnacunnet baseball player Harvey Reynoso and Exeter baseball player Ethan Battles.
Uraskevich won the online poll by receiving nearly 53% of the votes, totaling 5,144. Portsmouth softball player Ainsley MacGlashing finished second with 2,228.
York tennis player Kaitlyn Thomas had 876 votes, Exeter softball player Landyn Theberge had 747 votes and Marshwood lacrosse player Maddy Poitras had 725 votes, to round out the five nominees..
Uraskevich struck out 16 and didn't allow a hit in a six-inning complete-game shutout for Spaulding in a 14-0 win over Manchester Central/Memorial on Monday, April 27. She added two hits and two RBIs in the win as well. Uraskevich scattered six hits, allowed three earned runs and struck out six over seven innings in a 5-4 loss to Salem on Friday, May 1.
"She's really been the workhorse," Spaulding head coach Sheila Colson said. "She's our only senior and is such a good role model with her hard work. She goes hard at every play, she's a great teammate, and always finds the positive ... this is exciting for her. We're not having a great season, but she's positive and she's pitching really well for us and hitting well."
Truax won the online poll by receiving nearly 36% of the votes, totaling 402. Marshwood lacrosse player Damien Gilmore finished second with 266 votes.
Dover lacrosse player Logan Carter had 224 votes, Newmarket baseball player Nate Fluet had 172 votes and York baseball player Henry Ober had 59 votes, to round out the five nominees, respectively.
Truax collected two hits for Spaulding in an 8-6 win over Manchester Central/West. He had four hits and drove in six runs in the Red Raiders' 15-0 win over Memorial on Wednesday, April 29.
"Garrett stepped up last week when we were short-handed and helped carry us to all three wins.," Spaulding head coach Brad Taylor said. "His power display against Memorial came early in the game when we needed a clutch hit. That night, he went 4-for-5, with a double and triple along with six RBIs. He also played outstanding defense at (first base). Garrett has a high baseball IQ, and is always working hard to improve. It's great to see him be recognized with this honor when there were so many high-caliber Seacoast athletes on that list."
