On Sunday night, the Seattle Seahawks claimed their second Super Bowl title with a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots. While the Seahawks got contributions from everyone two former Longhorns played key roles. Those players were defensive tackle Byron Murphy II and punter Michael Dickson.
Over the last few months, the Seahawks defense has frustrated offensive coordinators with Murphy at the center of their success. That was on display in the biggest game of his career. In the Super Bowl, Murphy had two sacks which was tied for the team lead. The only other player with multiple sacks was Derrick Hall who also had two.
While Murphy made life difficult for Drake Maye, Dickson was stellar. The former fifth round pick punted seven times for 335 yards. He averaged 47.9 yards a kick and pinned the Patriots inside their 20 yard line three times. For a team that struggled to get any momentum, Dickson made sure, they didn't have great field position.
In the Seahawks' latest title-clinching win, the Longhorns duo showed why they have bright futures. In his second NFL season, Murphy recorded 62 tackles and seven sacks. The Texas native appeared in all 17 games and can now call himself a Super Bowl champion.
Although Murphy's career is just getting started, Dickson has become a reliable source of excellence for the Seahawks. In eight seasons with Seattle, the Australian native has recorded 556 punts for 26,829 yards. He also has 49 touchbacks during that span.
Now the focus for Seattle will be on finding a way to defend its title. With Murphy and Dickson still in the mix, this team is set up for success for the foreseeable future.
