The Seattle Seahawks were absolutely rocked by a trade within the NFC West on Monday. The Los Angeles Rams acquired superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. The Rams sent a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round selection, 2029 third-round pick, and EDGE Jared Verse to the Browns.

The Rams were the Seahawks' biggest contender for the NFC West division title in 2025. The Seahawks defeated the Rams in the NFC Championship Game en route to Super Bowl 60. Getting the reigning Defensive Player of the Year could tip the scales.

The Seahawks have possibly considered acquiring a superstar pass rusher this offseason. That thought process helped lead to the Dante Fowler Jr. signing. The Seahawks were never real contenders to trade for Garrett, however.

Including Verse, a young pass rusher who is a two-time Pro Bowler, was imperative to completing the deal. If the Seahawks wanted to actually make a competitive offer for Garrett, they probably would have needed to include defensive tackle Byron Murphy II. The Seahawks made the right decision by choosing to hold onto Murphy.

Murphy broke out as a sophomore in 2025 with seven sacks. The Rams are in win-now mode with quarterback Matthew Stafford possibly entering his final season before retirement. Meanwhile the Seahawks have young stars like the 24-year-old Jaxon Smith-Njigba and 25-year-old Devon Witherspoon.

It simply didn't make sense for the Seahawks to include Murphy in any proposed trade for Garrett.
