This video has a pretty cool caption about Jayson Tatum’s decision to become a Blue Devil; “Jayson Tatum never thought he’d go to Duke. He didn’t think kids from where he came from ended up at Duke, and never imagined Coach K recruiting him. Then he took one visit there. He told his mom, ‘We need to start buying hoodies.’ He never took another [visit].”
That’s a pretty cool story, but you wonder if he knew Chris Carrawell’s story.
C-well is also from St. Louis, attending Cardinal Ritter High in St. Louis proper, while Tatum attended Chaminade, in the nearby suburb of Creve Coeur.
It’s not like we were there, but that seems like a useful person to have for this particular recruitment.
Anyway, this video is a good look back at what a promising player Tatum was at Duke. You may remember that Tatum had a foot injury early in his one season in Durham. It slowed him down for a bit, but after that, he was off to the races.
Boston had the first pick, but knew that Philly, picking second, and the Los Angeles Lakers, picking third, both needed point guards. So GM Danny Ainge was happy to trade down because he knew he would still get Tatum, his #1 target, with the #3 pick.
That was obviously a brilliant move by Boston, because neither Philadelphia’s pick, Markelle Fulz, or L.A.‘s pick, Lonzo Ball, have had great careers. But Tatum has an NBA championship and is possibly a Hall of Fame level player.
