Connor Prielipp returned from the injured list on Sunday and made the best start of his young career to lead the Twins past the Athletics, 11-8, in front of 19,701 at sweltering Target Field.
With a first-temperature of 92 degrees, Prielipp faced the minimum through five innings — with the help of two double-play grounders — and left with two out in the sixth and a 7-0 lead.
Austin Martin doubled, walked and scored two runs, Ryan Jefferson drove in three runs with a pair of two-out singles and Ryan Kreilder hit three doubles, scored a run and drove in another as the Twins won the series, 3-2.
They have a day off Monday before playing host to Kansas City for three, one of two remaining series before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Prielipp (3-5) allowed only two hits but was charged with an earned run after Jeff McNeil, his lone walk, scored on Nick Kurtz’s two-out, three-run homer off Cole Sands.
Sands was pitching in his first game since going on the injured list with a forearm strain on May 2.
Things had been bad to that point for the Athletics, who committed four errors — including a three-base error on left fielder Tyler Sodostrom that scored a run in the sixth — and gave up 12 hits. But they got back into the game with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to cut the Twins’ lead to 8-6.
It didn’t last long.
Kody Clemens tripled and scored on Luke Keaschall’s sacrifice fly to make it 9-6 in the seventh, and the Twins added two more runs in the eighth when Brooks Lee hit a leadoff single and scored on Ryan Kreidler’s third double of the game. Kreidler scored from third on Jeffers’ infield single to make it 11-6.
The Twins wasted little time getting to A’s starter Jeffrey Springs.

Lewis stole second and scored on a triple by Clemens, and Clemens hustled home on an error by shortstop Alika Williams to make it 3-0 out of the gate.
Springs put the first two batters he faced in the second — Alex Jackson and Brooks Lee — on base with a single and a walk before getting No. 9 hitter Ryan Kreidler on a line drive right at left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Springs then threw two pitches to Martin before the A’s trainer went to the mound for a visit and Springs left after throwing just 32 pitches.
