Julia Fair Gaines of Tupelo and J.A. Wood of Itawamba AHS have been voted Daily Journal Athletes of the Week.
Gaines, a member of the tennis team, won her girls singles match against Madison Central in the Class 7A state finals on Monday. That win gave the Golden Wave a 4-3 victory and the championship. Then on Wednesday, Gaines teamed up with Luke Williamson in the individual tournament to win the mixed doubles title.
Gaines received 58.5% of the vote in the Female Athlete of the Week Twitter poll. The other nominees were Walnut’s Addison Hicks and Corinth’s McKinley Moore.
Wood, a catcher for Itawamba’s baseball team, went 6 for 8 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and four runs scored over his last three games. He earned 58.6% of the vote in the Male Athlete of the Week poll, beating out Corinth’s Griffin Enis and Holly Springs’ Tray Kinkle.
