Layla Owens of Itawamba AHS and Ethan Cates of Mooreville have been voted Daily Journal Athletes of the Week.
Owens, a junior pitcher for the Indians’ softball team, allowed zero runs on six hits with 24 strikeouts over 12 innings pitched in a Class 4A playoff sweep of Northeast Lauderdale. She earned 42.2% of the vote in the Female Athlete of the Week Twitter poll, beating out Ingomar’s Cadie Jo Byrd and North Pontotoc’s Sadie Rhea.
Cates, a junior designated hitter for the Troopers, went 6 for 8 with a double, a home run and six RBIs in a 4A playoff sweep of Belmont. He received 43.9% of the vote in the Male Athlete of the Week poll. The other nominees were Falkner’s Jackson Jordan and New Site’s Landon Stanley.
