West Creek will forfeit five days of preseason TSSAA football practices after self-reporting a violation of the association’s heat acclimatization policy.
According to a letter to the school provided by the TSSAA, the team practiced in helmets and shoulder pads one day, while rules only permit teams to practice in helmets during this stage.
The heat acclimatization period does not begin until July 20.
West Creek proposed deducting three days of practice from the Coyotes and third-year coach Michael Booker, and the TSSAA added additional two, bringing the total to five.

“We appreciate the school's immediate review of the football heat acclimatization with the coaching staff and your recognition that these requirements exist first and foremost to protect the health and safety of student-athletes,” TSSAA executive director Mark Reeves wrote in a letter to West Creek athletic director Patrick Digby. “After reviewing the information provided, the TSSAA accepts your proposed corrective action of removing three days of off-season football practice. However, we are requiring two additional days of off-season football practice to be forfeited, for a total of five days of the twelve permitted off-season practice days.”
The TSSAA heat acclimatization period is a week-long period of single practice days during which players are not yet allowed to wear full pads. Instead, teams are allowed two days of practice with helmets only followed by three days with helmets and shoulder pads only (with no pants or tights below the knees).
Tennessee high school football teams can begin fully padded practices on July 27, provided that individuals have had two days of helmet-only practice and three days of helmet-and-shoulder-pad-only practice.
