"Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs has had a tough go of it recently. For starters, he ran a disappointing 4.77 time in the 40, which has some NFL personnel men scratching their heads. Then, he "tweaked" his hamstring at that same workout and was unable to convince the Texans, who have the No. 3 pick overall and seem to be the first team with legitimate interest in drafting Suggs, of his ability to play the outside linebacker position in a 3-4 defensive scheme.

Finally, Suggs' agent, Gary Wichard, told The Arizona Republic that his client will be cooperating with an investigation of a fight in downtown Phoenix. According to the Republic, Suggs was picking up his cousin at a 3-on-3 basketball tournament where apparently he was hit in the head with a rod. Suggs is being accused by one man as being the instigator of the ruckus, which led to that same man's broken nose. Wichard told the Republic that Suggs' actions were in self-defense.

But with all of that said, we'd still be shocked if Suggs slipped any further than the sixth pick overall (Cardinals), and it wouldn't surprise us if he ultimately wound up with the Texans at No. 3 overall. . . .

Now that Hugh Douglas has signed with the Jaguars and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila re-signed with the Packers, the Eagles are in desperate need of help at defensive end.

The team apparently is contemplating bringing in free-agent defensive end Vonnie Holliday for a visit, and it also could benefit from the June 1 cut day. Philadelphia would like to solve the problem on draft day, but unless it makes an unorthodox decision to package picks in order to move up to the middle of the round to draft Miami's Jerome McDougle or Nebraska's Chris Kelsay, it doesn't look like the team will find the answer at that position with the 30th overall pick.

After Suggs, McDougle and Kelsay, there is not a bona-fide first-round end left. Penn State's Michael Haynes and Louisville's Dewayne White are the next best available, but neither excites the Eagles. . . .

Boston College defensive end Antonio Garay got off to a terrific start to his senior season, and at one point was considered a possible late first-round prospect.

He had 34 total tackles, 7.5 for loss and five sacks in half of the team's games (six) before suffering his second consecutive season-ending injury (hip). Garay has been rehabbing the injury and recently was able to participate in Boston College's pro day workout, but scouts that we spoke to that were in attendance all agreed that Garay was not the same.

They concurred that he did not look as explosive or agile, and it showed up in his pedestrian results in the 40-yard dash (4.95 and 5.0), short shuttle (4.48 ), vertical jump (29 inches), long jump (7-10) and 3-cone workout (7.44). . . .

Cincinnati's Antwan Peek, on the other hand, helped himself at his workout last week with a strong overall performance. Peek is a 'tweener defensive end/outside linebacker that probably would fit best in a 3-4 defense or in a Roosevelt Colvin-type role in the NFL because of his speed and upfield explosiveness.

Granted, the track at Cincinnati's workout facility is notoriously fast, but he still put up impressive overall numbers, running a 4.55 in the 40, a .421 in the short shuttle, and a 6.85 in the 3-cone drill. He also had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10-4 measurement in the long jump, and put up the standard 225-pound bench press a respectable 25 times. Peek conceivably could be drafted as high as late in Day 1, but most likely he still will be available early on the second day. "
