President Donald Trump was on stage during Spain’s World Cup trophy lift — but not in the photo posted to social media.
Trump presented Spain with its second World Cup trophy ever, after it defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 on Sunday. As gold confetti rained down on the team, the U.S. president crashed the moment from the side — despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino seemingly attempting to intervene.
La Roja posted an image on X of the celebration, prompting many social media users to notice that Trump was not pictured.
“LOL SPAIN EDITED TRUMP OUT OF THE PHOTO,” Liberal influencer Harry Sisson replied.
One user noted: “HAHAHAHAHA, THEY TOOK OUT TRUMP.”
A soccer account joked, “Hold on, something’s missing from this photo,” while another user said that “they deleted you-know-who.”
“Did they photoshop Trump out of the picture?” someone else asked with laughing face emojis.
Trump became the first U.S. president to attend the men’s World Cup final. He was joined by a number of others world leaders, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, both of whom also shook hands with players while the medals were handed out.
Before the match, Trump said he was not picking sides of who he believed would win, but acknowledged it was “hard to bet” against Argentine team captain and soccer superstar Lionel Messi.
“I hate to get involved, even though politically it doesn’t matter so much,” Trump told Fox Sports. “The head of Argentina is a friend of mine. He’s done a terrific job.”
Meanwhile, the president had bad-mouthed Spain last month, accusing Madrid of failing to contribute more financially to the NATO alliance.
“Spain is a wasted cause,” Trump said at the NATO summit in Turkey on July 8. “We don’t want to do any trade with Spain anymore, by the way.”
