Football players, coaches and fans honored Rondale Moore, the New Albany, Indiana native and former Trinity and NFL wide receiver, after his death Feb. 21. Moore was 25.
Chief Todd Bailey with the New Albany Police Department said Moore was found dead in the garage of a property in the 1600 block of Ekin Avenue in New Albany of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. Matthew Tomlin, coroner for Floyd County, Indiana, said an autopsy will be performed Feb. 22.
Shortly after Floyd County officials confirmed Moore's death, Jeff Brohm, the current head football coach for the University of Louisville, who coached Moore at Purdue, released a statement on social media.
"Rondale Moore was a complete joy to coach. The ultimate competitor that wouldn’t back down from any challenge," Brohm, a Trinity alumnus, said. "Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone. A great teammate what would come through in any situation. We all loved Rondale. We loved his smile and competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with. We offer all of our thoughts and prayers to Rondale and his family. We love him very much.”
Moore was a first-team All-State selection as a senior at Trinity in 2017 and went on to play three seasons at Purdue (2018-20).

As a freshman at Purdue in 2018, he caught 114 passes for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns, was a consensus first-team All-American and won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player.
In a statement posted to X, Purdue football officials said they are "deeply saddened" to learn of Moore's death.
"An All-American with an infectious smile, Rondale was a joy on and off the field. Someone who left this world too soon, Rondale will be remembered a legendary Boilermaker. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rondale's family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Prior to enrolling at Trinity, Moore attended New Albany High School. After learning of his death, New Albany Athletic Director Shawn Garmon said in a statement the entire department offered its "deepest sympathy" to Moore's family.
"Rondale was an inspiration to the youth in our community and we will all miss his infectious smile," Garmon said. "We send our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and teammates of Rondale and are truly very sorry for your loss."
Moore was a second-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2021 NFL Draft and played for the Cardinals for three seasons (2021-23). He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons but missed the entire 2024 season after suffering a knee injury during training camp. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2025 and once again suffered a season-ending knee injury during a preseason game against the Houston Texans.
In a statement from the team, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said he is "devastated by the news of Rondale's death."
"While Rondale had been a member of the Vikings for a short time, he was someone we came to know well and care about deeply. He was a humble, soft-spoken and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots. As a player, he was disciplined, dedicated and resilient despite facing adversity multiple times as injuries sidelined him throughout his career. We are all heartbroken by the fact he won't be able to live out his NFL dream and we won't have a chance to watch him flourish. My prayers are with Rondale's family, friends, teammates and coaches as we all deal with this tragic news."
The Vikings' X account reposted condolences from several players on the team, including one from former UofL defensive lineman Jonathan Greenard.
Moore also received a tribute from the Arizona Cardinals, whose fans watched him accumulate 1,201 receiving yards and four touchdowns over three seasons of play.
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, teammates and everyone who loved him and had the privilege of knowing such a special person," a statement from the team read.
The NFLPA also issued a statement: "The NFL Players Association is devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Rondale Moore. This immense loss is felt deeply across our union, and we value his service as a player rep. Our condolences and prayers are with Rondale's family, teammates and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
