The news that Dusty May is leaving Michigan for the NBA sent shockwaves through college basketball on Monday.
But amid the uncertainty surrounding the Wolverines program, one of Michigan’s biggest stars is already providing some stability.
Sophomore guard Trey McKenney says he plans to remain in Ann Arbor and hopes the rest of Michigan’s roster follows suit.
Like much of the Michigan fanbase, McKenney learned about May’s departure through social media.
The reigning All-Big Ten freshman admitted he was surprised by the news.
“I would say I’m just shocked,” McKenney told The Detroit News. “I don’t want to have too many comments on it, but I’m just really excited with the group of guys we have now, and hopefully we can retain everybody.”
The timing of the move only adds to the uncertainty. Michigan players were expected to begin summer practices Monday before everything was suddenly put on hold following reports that May is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
Whenever a coach leaves, especially after winning a national championship, questions immediately arise about roster retention.
The NCAA allows players to enter a special transfer portal window after a coaching change, and Michigan could soon face difficult decisions from players evaluating their futures.
McKenney, however, made his intentions clear.
“Absolutely, yeah,” he said when asked if he plans to stay at Michigan. “But things have to present themselves.”
While that leaves some room for future developments, his overall message was unmistakable. He wants to remain a Wolverine and hopes his teammates feel the same way.
One reason McKenney appears comfortable moving forward is the presence of assistant coach Mike Boynton, who is reportedly being elevated to interim head coach.
McKenney believes Boynton is the right person to guide the program through this transition.
“I think he’s the guy for the job,” McKenney said. “He’s the guy who recruited me, him and Dusty, so I really trust in him and what he’s going to be able to do for the program.”
That endorsement could carry significant weight in the coming days as Michigan works to keep its championship roster intact.
While losing a national championship-winning coach is never ideal, McKenney remains optimistic about the roster that May and his staff assembled.
“It’s obviously a whirlwind, because it’s so late,” McKenney said. “It’s definitely upsetting that we can’t get the show on the road. It’s obviously a bump in the road, and some adversity that we have to face, but we’ll come out on top.”
He added that Michigan still has a “really great team” and believes the Wolverines have enough talent to remain one of the nation’s top programs.
That confidence could prove critical during what may be the most important few weeks of the offseason.
The biggest question now isn’t who replaces Dusty May.
It’s whether Michigan can keep the core of its championship roster together.
McKenney has already chosen his side.
The Flint native is staying put and believes Michigan still has everything it needs to compete at a high level.
Now Wolverines fans will be watching closely to see if the rest of the roster follows his lead.
