In an annual anonymous survey gathered by Mike Sando of The Athletic, 50 voters across the NFL — from head coaches to former general managers to offensive assistants to analytics/game management coaches — placed 35 veteran quarterbacks into five tiers.

This year’s results saw Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence leap into Tier 2, marking just his second career appearance in the category (2022). The percentage of Tier 2 votes he’s received started at 8% as a rookie, jumped to 66%, fell to 36%, continued dipping to 20%, and then shot back up again to 52% following last season.

Here’s a breakdown of Lawrence’s votes this year.

  • 1 vote for Tier 1: “Carries his team each week”
  • 26 votes for Tier 2: “Carries his team sometimes”
  • 23 votes for Tier 3: “Legit starter but needs a better run game or defense to win”
  • No votes for Tier 4: “Unproven player or veteran who ideally would not be a full season starter”
  • No votes for Tier 5: “Not a starter, period”

It looks like readers are even less optimistic about Lawrence. According to the survey embedded into the article, 62% of The Athletic’s subscribers ranked Lawrence as a Tier 3 quarterback, compared to 30% for Tier 2 and just 2% for Tier 1.

“Man, if there’s anybody that’s between a 2 and a 3, I would say him right now,” a former head coach told Sando. “If he does it again this year, I could see putting him as a standing 2.”

“You are not in Year 2 anymore,” an offensive coordinator said. “This is just kind of who you are — streaky, up and down.”

Is this blatant disrespect, or are fair points being made?

Which “tier” would you place Lawrence into right now?
