Boys weightlifting was the first spring sport to hold district tournaments, and athletes from Fort Meade, Lake Gibson, Auburndale, Lake Wales and Haines City show up in this week's Tremendous 10 poll, sponsored by Central Florida Behavior Health Network.
In last week's poll, Victory Christian hurdler AJ Cunningham won with 41.7 percent of the vote. McKeel softball player Chloe Lanier finished runner-up with 34 percent, and Winter Haven track athlete Deveen McPerson was third with 16.5 percent.
Nominees for the poll can be sent to [email protected] by 9 a.m. every Monday. The poll is opened until noon every Thursday.
1 Fort Meade’s Angel Quintero (boys weightlifting) won the 169-pound weight class in the Traditional (495 pounds) and the Olympic (395 pounds) competitions at the Class 1A, District 12 meet.
2 Lakeland Christian freshman Kole Walker (baseball) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a one-hitter over 5 2/3 scoreless innings against Class 7A power George Jenkins. He struck out one batter and walked one. For the season, Walker is 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 37 innings.
3 McKeel freshman Zion Smith (boys track and field) won the javelin with a throw of 48.19m at the George Jenkins Senior Night Meet. He is ranked No. 1 in the county in the event with that throw.
The Ledger's Tremendous 10 Poll
4 Auburndale senior Ailenid Lozada (softball) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the Bloodhounds’ 4-3 victory over Lakeland Christian. She finished the week batting .600 (3-for-5) in two games with three RBIs.
5 Haines City senior Zebrielle Canaday (flag football) ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries in the Hornets’ 19-0 victory over Auburndale.
6 Lake Gibson junior Brayden Doster (boys weightlifting) won the 238-pound weight class in Traditional (565 pounds) and Olympic (435 pounds) at the 2A-11 district meet.
7 Auburndale senior Trey Sullivan (boys weightlifting) won the unlimited weight class in Traditional (680 pounds) and Olympic (560 pounds) at the 2A-11 district meet.
8 Lake Wales senior Jackson Crane (boys weightlifting) won the 139-pound weight class in Olympic (405 pounds) and finished second in Traditional (395 pounds) at the 2A-11 district meet.
9 Haines City senior John Garcia (boys weightlifting) won the 129-pound weight class in Traditional (300 pounds) and Olympic (290 pounds) at the 3A-10 district meet.
10 Santa Fe Catholic senior Jameson McGuire (baseball) pitched seven innings and struck out 10 and went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs against Bartow. For the season, McGuire is 7-1 with a 0.83 ERA and is batting .449 with 13 extra-base hits and 18 RBIs.
