The Davey Tree Expert Co. kicked off a free, three-day North American Tree Climbing Championship run by the International Society of Aboriculture at its new SEED Campus in Kent on May 15. The public is invited to view competition, as well as enjoy food trucks and family-friendly activities.
Seventy-one skilled tree climbers from Canada, the United States, and Mexico came together to compete in initial qualifying rounds for aerial rescue, work climb, ascent, belayed speed climb and throwline.
The contests highlight skill, technique and athleticism while reinforcing the elements of safety and good work practices.
According to Paige Johnson, project manager at Davey Tree, “this competition is usually held in public parks, so this is the first time it has been held on private land, but open to the public.”
If you plan to go Saturday or Sunday, park at Davey’s corporate office at 1500 N. Mantua St.. Free shuttles go to the nearby SEED Campus. Qualifying events run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and the masters challenge is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Kids’ activities run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, and the Arbor Fair is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
