The Portland Trail Blazers made a big move this offseason, acquiring star point guard Ja Morant from the Memphis Grizzlies for Kris Murry and veteran swingman Jerami Grant. Following the move, Morant unveiled a new number, selecting No. 1 after wearing No. 12 for seven seasons with the Grizzlies.
Morant was recently asked about his new number change and why he didn't continue wearing No. 12. To that, he responded, saying, "The organization has other plans for it." Putting two and two together, it appears as though the Trail Blazers may be planning to retire the No. 12, worn by one of the great Trail Blazers in recent history, LaMarcus Aldridge. A seven-time NBA All-Star and a five-time All-NBA honoree, Aldridge was fantastic for the Portland over nine seasons, averaging 19.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, one block and 0.8 steals. He earned a top-10 finish in MVP voting twice, with his best finish (seventh) coming during the 2014-15 campaign.
With over 1,000 career games played and 20,500 points for his career, Aldridge will go down as one of the better frontcourt players to have spent his prime in Portland.
