The Dallas Mavericks are starting the beginning of a new era. Dallas brought in former Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri to be the Mavericks’ President. One of Ujiri’s first moves in the role was parting ways with head coach Jason Kidd.

Now, Ujiri will focus on not only finding a new head coach but also on laying the foundation for a team that will compete for championships around Cooper Flagg, the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year.

So we’re not going to make decisions based on winning today,” Masai told media members after letting Kidd go. “I don’t think that would make sense for the organization. We’re looking at it like: what is our future going to look like? What is winning going to look like? How is this organization going to be built? What is the vision? How are we all aligned? It’s medical to coaching to scouting, everything you can possibly think of. We are looking at the future. We have a 19-year-old on this team that can take us somewhere great. We have to think about that.”

It’s clear Dallas is embracing a rebuild around Flagg, which means veteran point guard Kyrie Irving may not fit into the franchise’s long-term prospects. Ujiri can trade Irving to a team looking to get over the hump, and one team makes a lot more sense than others.

Raptors star Scottie Barnes showed in Toronto’s playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers that he has what it takes to be an elite number one option in the NBA, but the Raptors are badly lacking adequate guard play around him. By making a win-now move to acquire Irving, the Raptors would be well-positioned to make a deep playoff run. The Raptors also have relatively young, talented players such as Immanuel Quickley and R.J. Barrett that could pique Dallas’s interest.

Irving has also been vocal on social media with his displeasure with the state of politics in the United States, so a move north of the border to Canada could make a lot of sense for the guard.

Ultimately, it’s unclear whether the Mavs will move Irving ahead of the season, and if they do, he’ll figure to have multiple suitors. However, if Toronto is serious about building a championship-level team, it should be proactive in its pursuit of who just might be the most skilled player in the NBA.
