This year has been one of the most disappointing in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays franchise.
The Blue Jays' World Series aspirations, after winning their first American League pennant since 1993 last season, have been all but dashed in a series full of injuries and regressions.
One of the few bright spots for Toronto this season has been starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
Cease signed with Toronto on a seven-year, $210 million contract after a pair of seasons with the San Diego Padres.
The Blue Jays made several signings this offseason, but Cease was considered the crown jewel.
Despite not being named the Opening Day starter at the beginning of this year, Cease has pitched his way into being the undisputed ace of Toronto's rotation. He was recognized for his accomplishments this season and was named the American League's starter in the All-Star game July 14 in Philadelphia.
Following his Midsummer Classic appearance, Cease has continued his career-best season, and added another gem to his season full of them.
The '26 All-Star pitched a complete game shutout in a game against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, in which the Blue Jays won 6-0.
In his complete game outing, Cease struck out 12 batters, walked three and allowed one hit in his nine innings of work.
It was Cease's ninth quality start in 19 starts this season.
Following his complete-game shutout, Cease etched his name into MLB history.
According to a post on "X" from Just Baseball (@JustBB_Media), Cease is just the third player in the history of the majors to have an ERA below 2.50 and 160 or more strikeouts in his first 19 starts with the organization. The other two players on that list are Hideo Nomo with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Gerrit Cole with the New York Yankees.
This season Cease has posted a 2.46 ERA and has fanned 167 batters in 113.1 innings pitched across his 19 starts.
Toronto's season isn't one either the organization or, likely, Cease expected in the offseason when the deal was done, but he'll likely continue to be a cornerstone of the franchise in the years going forward.
Cease's performance and likely status as the undisputed ace of the Blue Jays going forward will benefit the team as it could potentially be heading toward being sellers at the trade deadline Aug. 3.
Following Toronto's win against Boston, the former is 48-57 and 13.5 games out of first place in the American League East.
