Torino 2-2 Inter Milan – Maurizio Mariani Changes Current Interpretation To Give Granata Controversial Penalty

Serie A referee Maurizio Mariani made a controversial decision in Sunday’s 2-2 draw between Torino and Inter Milan.

According to FCInterNews, the 44-year-old awarded a dubious penalty, helping the Granata ‘steal’ a point on home turf.

Goals from Marcus Thuram and Yann Bisseck on either side of halftime gave Inter a comfortable-looking lead.

However, Roberto D’Aversa’s side fought back in the final 20 minutes to end Inter’s three-game winning league streak.

Indeed, Giovanni Simeone sparked the hosts’ comeback with a well-taken goal, finishing off a slick move after a well-worked build-up.

Though Simeone’s goal came after a well-crafted move, the perennial mid-table strugglers got a decisive nudge from the referee.

Despite initially waving play on, Maurizio Mariani eventually penalized Carlos Augusto’s handball after receiving a call from the VAR booth.

Indeed, he changed his mind after reviewing the incident, allowing Nikola Vlasic to rescue a draw for the Granata.

However, Mariani’s decision was dubious, to say the least, as the ball struck Augusto’s arm from close range.

In fact, the Nerazzurri defender had no time to react, making the call feel particularly harsh in the context of the incident.
