Caleb Banks' withdrawal from his workout at the NFL scouting combine turned out to be more than a matter of mere preference.
The former Florida defensive tackle and top NFL draft prospect suffered a broken foot at the combine that will leave him out of action until June, The Athletic's Dane Brugler reported Thursday.
Banks created a stir at the combine when the 6-6, 327-pound lineman notched a 9-6 broad jump – the second-best mark at his position – along with a 32-inch vertical and 5.04-second 40-yard dash.
But he opted not to participate in an on-field workout along with his peers, with the NFL Network broadcast at the time attributing the decision to cleat discomfort.
Brugler reported, however, that Banks fractured his fourth metatarsal the previous evening during a partial workout in preparation for positional drills. He underwent surgery on March 9, per Brugler.
Banks missed all but two games of last season with a foot injury sustained during fall camp.
Since a standout performance at Senior Bowl practices in February, Banks has been widely seen as a leading candidate to be the first defensive tackle selected in April's NFL Draft. USA TODAY Sports' latest mock draft projected him to be selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with the No. 22 overall pick in the first round.
