It's not often you find out how a quarterback was named the team's starter nearly 20 years after the fact.
That's exactly what happened in former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's interview on Barstool's "Pardon My Take" podcast. Romo was discussing his career and how he became Dallas' starting quarterback during the 2006 season.
Romo made his first career start on Oct. 29, 2006 in Dallas' Week 8 matchup with the Panthers. As it turns out, the decision between Romo and Drew Bledsoe was taken to a vote. According to Romo, then-head coach Bill Parcells marched his coaching staff into a room and took a vote among the coaching staff to decide who would be under center against Carolina that week.
Romo narrowly won the vote, led the Cowoys to a 35-14 win over the Panthers in which he completed 24 of 36 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown, and the rest is history. He went on to be Dallas' starting quarterback until Dak Prescott's emergence a decade later.
Read Romo's recount of how he became the Cowboys' starting quarterback below.

"Parcells did this, he brought every coach in there and they're all sitting in there and he said, 'I want everyone to vote who should be our starting quarterback.' I don't think people know this story. He brings in every coach, let's say there's 15 votes. He goes, 'If we're doing this, we're all in this together. We're going to vote. Is it Bledsoe or is it Romo?'
"The truth is, that day right there, I think Parcells knew what he wanted, but he wanted all the coaches' advice. But I think he already went in and probably asked each guy. I think Bill knew already, he's like, 'I'm not voting, you guys are voting, here we go. Let's see and whatever it ends up, we'll do and we'll do it together as a team, as coaches.' That's not Parcells, he knows what he's doing, I feel like he went into each office before and probably did it. I don't know that factually.
"It goes through and who does he save for last in the vote? The assistant quarterbacks coach. He saved the one guy when it's 7-7 and the last guy is the guy who I work with every single day, I'm like I have a feeling that Parcells knew how the vote was going to turn out. It ended up being me, barely. This is all secondhand from the coaches and the people that I knew."
