The Boston Red Sox recalled veteran right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle to bolster the bullpen.

Kahnle triggered a June 1 opt-out clause in his contract, which forced Boston to add him to the MLB roster. In his Red Sox debut on Friday, he knew he needed to eat some innings and save the bullpen, which is exactly what he did as he pitched two scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing two hits, two walks, and striking out one.

“Exhausting. It’s hot out,” Kahnle said postgame on Thursday. “I knew that I had to kind of eat some innings, especially to help the bullpen out. It was fun to get it back out there. So I felt like it was OK, but it was cool. It's been a while since I’ve been in a big league stadium again. So it was nice to get back out there.”

Kahnle pitched the eighth and ninth innings as he entered the game with the Red Sox trailing 8-1, as his goal was to just finish the game.

It was a solid debut from Kahnle, who could see some more high-leverage situations as he builds up trust with interim manager Chad Tracy.

With the 8-1 loss to Baltimore, the Red Sox fell to 26-35 and will begin a three-game road series against the New York Yankees on Friday.
