The Boston Red Soxannounced that the team was finally calling up 36-year-old reliever Tommy Kahnle from Triple-A Worcester ahead of their game against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.

Kahnle had been tearing things up in the minor leagues this season, posting a blistering 1.40 ERA across 18 appearances in Worcester. The 36-year-old reliever opted out of his minor league contract earlier this week due to his success, leaving Boston with a 48-hour window to call him up, trade him, or allow him to become a free agent.

Kahnle is an 11-year MLB veteran who most recently played for the Detroit Tigers in 2025. The Red Sox are familiar with the 36-year-old, who spent two previous stints playing for the New York Yankees. Kahnle revealed he "had a feeling" Boston would call him up at this time, as the team is set to take on New York in a three-game series beginning on Friday.

“I had a feeling,” Kahnle said, per MLB.com's Ian Browne. “I looked at the schedule and I went, ‘of course.’ But, it's going to be the same thing. This time I'll be on the opposite side of this rivalry. So I'm pretty excited to see that.”

The Red Sox immediately put the veteran reliever to use after going down early to the Orioles on Thursday, with Kahnle pitching two scoreless innings. The 36-year-old described the feeling of returning to the big leagues after spending time in the minors.

“Exhausting. It’s hot out. I knew that I had to kind of eat some innings, especially to help the bullpen out,” Kahnle said, per Browne. “It was fun to get it back out there. So I felt like it was OK, but it was cool. It's been a while since I’ve been in a big league stadium again. So it was nice to get back out there.”

Though the timing of Kahnle's promotion is definitely interesting, now Boston's bullpen should be even more formidable moving forward.
