Toledo Mud Hens 7, Iowa Cubs 6 (box)
The Mud Hens took an early lead over Iowa, but a four-run seventh from Iowa set up a walk-off, 3-2, win for Toledo.
The first half of the game went perfectly. Troy Watson got through five innings, giving up just one run in the final frame of his outing. He didn’t strike out a ton of batters, but he stayed out of trouble for most of the day. Two walks in the first and a leadoff double in the second were the only tricky spots until a leadoff homer in the fifth.
Meanwhile, Toledo’s offense gave Watson a 5-0 lead with two crooked numbers. Cal Stevenson and Brett Callahan hit two-run homers in the third and fourth, respectively.
Jace Jung was on base for Stevenson’s bomb and then hit his own in the next inning — a solo shot.
Nick Sandlin took over for Watson in the sixth and worked around a one-out single. He wasn’t as sharp in the seventh, though. A walk and a two-run homer made it a 5-3 game, and a third consecutive hit knocked Sandlin out of the game.
Jack Little took over, only to give up an RBI triple to the first batter he faced. Another single — that’s five straight hits allowed by Toledo’s staff — tied the game up. Enmanuel De Jesus ran into trouble in the eighth, allowing a single and a double, but Iowa couldn’t score.
Unfortunately, Toledo had just as much trouble scoring, and Corey Julks got hurt running out a single in the eighth. Julks left the game after getting looked at.
Tanner Rainey came in for the ninth and gave up the go-ahead run on back-to-back singles, a bunt and a sacrifice fly. That’s when the Toledo offense found its rhythm again.
Max Clark led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, Max Anderson doubled and Gage Workman singled to tie things up at six. Iowa intentionally walked Eduardo Valencia to load the bases for Callahan, who delivered his fourth hit of the night to walk it off.

Erie SeaWolves 9, Akron RubberDucks 7 (box)
Some early fireworks helped Erie defeat the Akron RubberDucks 9-7 on the Fourth of July.
The SeaWolves had three runs before recording their first out. Seth Stephenson and Peyton Graham both singled before Chris Meyers blasted a three-run homer to right-center.
Akron got two of those runs back on a homer in the bottom of the first, but Erie plated another five in the second. Justice Bigbie singled with two on to load the bases, and Andrew Jenkins drove in Peyton Graham and Meyers to make it 5-2. Max Burt hits a three-run shot to double that lead. Unfortunately, Graham left the game in the fifth as a result of the ball he took off the hand in this frame.
Lael Lockhart got the start for Erie. After giving up the two runs in the first, he settled in nicely, striking out seven and allowing just a walk and a hit through the next 3.1 innings. A third run crossed with him on the mound in the third, but that came on a two-out error, which makes it unearned.
Johan Simon took over for Lockhart in the fifth with one out and nobody on. Simon threw the ball away for an error and then allowed the next three batters to reach base. The last was the only one to bring in runs, but it was a two-out double to clear the bases.
Simon was much cleaner in the sixth, going 1-2-3 with a strikeout. Yoniel Curet replaced him in the seventh, only to load the bases with no outs. Curet managed to escape the jam without giving up a run, which saved the game. He ran into trouble again in the eighth, allowing the first two hitters to reach. Tanner Kohlhepp cleaned things up, but a sacrifice fly still scored a run.
Fortunately, Garrett Pennington tripled and drove in a run in the top of the inning to even things out. Pennington had entered the game for Graham so there was some justice involved. Trevin Michael closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth, earning his third save.

Lake County Captains 6, West Michigan Whitecaps 5 (box)
West Michigan blew a 4-0 lead to Lake County on Saturday thanks to a shaky middle third from the pitching staff. The Captains took the win, 6-5.
Patrick Lee got the Whitecaps on the board early with a grand slam in the second.
Charlie Christensen got the start — his second at High-A and first at LMCU Ballpark — going four innings and allowing one run. His only real blemish was giving up a solo home run in the fourth. Everything else was good, with five strikeouts to one walk and one other hit.
Juanmi Vasquez couldn’t keep things up in relief, though. Vasquez gave up two runs in the fifth after walking a batter with two outs and allowing a pair of stolen bases. Ricardo Hurtado got one of those runs back for West Michigan in the bottom half of the inning, following up a Bryce Rainer double with an RBI single.
Vasquez got into trouble again with two outs in the sixth. He walked a batter, allowed a double and gave up the lead on a three-run shot. Zack Lee relieved Vasquez and retired all four batters he faced through the seventh. Lee had three strikeouts for a nice day.
Thomas Bruss got the final two innings on the mound. He was also good, striking out four with one walk and a base hit. The offense never came through with another run, though, and Vasquez took the loss for West Michigan.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 7, Palm Beach Cardinals 5 (box)
Paul Wilson made his first start with Lakeland in a 7-5 win for the Flying Tigers over the Palm Beach Cardinals.
Wilson, Detroit’s third-round pick in 2023, worked 2.2 innings without allowing a hit. He struck out six and walked a pair while averaging 94.8 mph on his fastball. He drew four whiffs with the sinker and one on the slider. They’re just easing him back into things, but the stuff looks solid so far.
The offense gave him three runs to work with in the second, off RBI base knocks from Anibal Salas, Jordan Yost and Beau Ankeney, in that order. Ankeney had a four-hit day, driving in three more runs — a two-run single in the fifth and an RBI double in the seventh.
Yost had a multi-hit day and stole a base. Josue Briceno walked three times and hit a 107-mph single.
Marco Jimenez finished out the third for Wilsona nd pitched through the fourth, continuing the no-hit trend. Pedro Garcia gave up the first hits to Palm Beach on the day, allowing runs to score in each of his two innings of work.
Antonio Florido struck out the side in the seventh, but he walked the bases loaded in the eighth. Two of those runners scored after Luke Hoskins took over, but Lakeland held on to its 7-5 lead the rest of the way.Yoan Valdez got his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth.

FCL Blue Jays 10, FCL Tigers 5 (box)
Zach Swanson got his second start in rookie ball, but this one didn’t go great. He walked four batters and hit another. Somehow, he escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first, but he got the hook with two on in the second after passing 20 pitches.
Jatnk Diaz got all three outs in the second, striking out a pair, and Owen Hall came in to throw multiple innings. Hall also struggled, giving up a leadoff double, throwing a wild pitch and walking the next two batters. He only gave up one run in that frame thanks to a fly ball double play.
Hall gave up a two-run homer in the fourth and was pulled with two outs in the sixth. A throwing error extended the inning, which led to a walk and an RBI single.
The good news is that the Tigers’ offense built up an early cushion, scoring four runs in the opening frame. Six straight batters reached in the first, including RBI singles from Cristian Perez and Josueth Quinonez. Newremberg Rondon also drove in a run on a ground out back to the pitcher.
Perez drove in another run in the fourth with a double, but the Tigers only had one more hit after that.
Frenny Grant, who took over for Hall in the sixth, worked around a one-out single in the sixth, but Bryce Alewin wasn’t as lucky in the seventh. Six of the first seven batters he faced reached base, and five of those baserunners ended up scoring for a 10-5 finish.

DSL Arizona Red 5, DSL Tigers (1) 4 (box)
The Arizona Red took a 5-0 lead, and the Tigers couldn’t chip away enough to ever tie the game back up.
It wasn’t a great day for Tigers starter Jefrey Gonzalez. He struck out the side in the first but fell apart in the second. He walked three batters and saw his defense make an error before getting removed with one out. Miguel Molina took over and walked in a run. Another error from third baseman Enny Rodriguez cleared the bases for a 5-run frame.
A pair of errors by Arizona led to a pair of runs for the Tigers in the bottom of the second. Armando Lao got the RBI single before a weather delay, and Carlos Benavides drove another run in after.
The duo of Randy Constanza and Rafael Gonzales held Arizona to just one hit over the next five innings. No walks, no hit batters and a combined four strikeouts. Not too shabby.
Randy Santana led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple and scored on a sac fly from Benavides. Santana scored again in the seventh, singling, stealing second and moving to third on a bad throw from the catcher. Benavides grounded out for another RBI, but the Tigers couldn’t find that fifth run to force extras.

DSL Rockies 8, DSL Tigers (2) 7 (box)
This was one of those all-hitting, no-pitching games for the Tigers No. 2 team in the Dominican Summer League. In the end, bad pitching led to a walk-off loss for this club, but five homers throughout the day is fun.
Santiago Ventura opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second. Samuell Sanchez hit his fifth of the year, a two-run shot, in the third. Ventura and Diego Orro both homered in the fourth, the former for his second time today and the latter for the first time all season. Manuel Bolivar had the final bomb, a solo shot in the fifth.
Alexander Bertiz got the start and went 4.2 innings. He retired six of the first seven batters he faced, but the third inning was rough. Four straight singles led to a run crossing. A groundout brought in one more, and another single gave the Rockies a 4-3 lead.
The Tigers retook the lead with the back half of those homers mentioned above, and Bertiz settled in for five straight outs. Back-to-back singles knocked him out of the game, though, and Abelardo Medrano finished off the fifth.
The bullpen needed just six outs with a three-run cushion, but it wasn’t meant to be. Medrano loaded the bases without recording an out, but a double play gave him a path out of the inning with a two-run lead. A rain delay put that to bed, forcing another pitching change.
Ericksson De Los Santos took over after the break and got the strikeout needed to hold the lead. Breimy Gueson was not as good in the seventh. He walked the leadoff man, struck out a batter, and walked another. Gueson hit a batter to load the bases and walked in a run. Jesus Miranda took over, but he threw a wild pitch to tie the game up. Another wild pitch cost the Tigers the game. What an ugly way to lose….
