As new Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken gets settled with the franchise and acclimated to his new roster, things continue to look worse for the man who closed last season as the starter, Shedeur Sanders, and better for Deshaun Watson, who missed last season with an injury.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, sources indicate that Monken and Watson have established a strong relationship in their limited time together, with Watson reportedly meshing well with Monken's offensive scheme.
“I’m told he’s hit it off with Todd Monken, who’s got an offensive concept, some elements that Watson has run in the past and been his best at,” Fowler said on Sportscenter.
With the Browns set to begin OTAs this week, all eyes will likely be on the battle between Sanders and Watson over the next few months. Watson came to the Browns in 2022 with multiple years of starting experience in Houston and has started all 19 games he's appeared in with the Browns.
But he missed 11 games due to suspension in 2022 over sexual assault allegations, and played in just six games in 2023 before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the season. He played in seven games in 2024 before tearing his Achilles tendon, which sidelined him for the rest of the season and all of 2025. He has a 9-10 record as a starter with the Browns and a 37-35 overall record as a starter in the NFL.
Sanders, meanwhile, was a rookie last season and started the year as a reserve before eventually landing the starting job midway through the season. He would make eight appearances and seven starts for the Browns last season, finishing with a 3-4 record as a starter.
