Today in Boston Celtics history, the team decided to waive center Tyler Zeller after three seasons with the storied ball club. Zeller, a 7-foot, 253-pound player from the University of North Carolina, was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the 17th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft before joining the Celtics through a trade.

The former Tar Heel was acquired by the franchise in a three-team deal, which also involved Marcus Thornton joining Boston from the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics absorbed Zeller's contract into their salary cap space to assist Cleveland in re-signing hometown superstar LeBron James in free agency, leveraging the situation to improve the team.

The Indiana native proved a lot more than a castoff player for Boston though, recording 7.1 points and 4 rebounds per game while with the team.

Birthdays

Former Boston forward Curtis Rowe was also born on this date in Bessemer, Alabama in 1949. Rowe played his college ball with UCLA under John Wooden and was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the 11th overall pick of the 1971 NBA draft. He came to Boston in a trade that sent Paul Silas to the Denver Nuggets, and played three seasons for the Celtics between 1976 and 1979. The Alabamian averaged 8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game over that stretch.

It is also the birthday of former Celtic center Rich Niemann, who played just six games for the team in the 1969-70 season, claimed off waivers by the team. He recorded 1 point and as many boards per game over that short run, moving on to several stints in the American Basketball Association (ABA) afterward.

Rowe and Niemann share their birthdays with guard Derrick White, born this day in 1994 in Parker, Colorado. After ending his college career at Colorado - Boulder, White was picked up with the 29th overall selection of the 2017 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. He was dealt to Boston in 2022, and helped Boston win a title in 2024. He remains with the team at the time of writing.
