The Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers got together for a joint practice session ahead of their preseason matchup on Thursday in what turned into an altercation-filled workout.
In what was described as an intense and physical practice, the Titans struggled to match the aggression and physicality early in the day, but settled into a heated battle. Tempers flared, and the Titans got the worst of it, with tackles Dan Moore and Austin Deculus being ejected for fighting.
There were a lot of uneven moments, and some players struggled, but as always, some players rose above and flashed. Here is a breakdown of some of the standouts from Tuesday’s practice.
As has been mentioned a few times since the Blue & White scrimmage, Carmona has been taking more snaps with the first team at right guard and is making the most of it. He carried that over on Tuesday and was noticed by multiple observers.
On a day where the offense had some struggles, the Ward to Robinson connection hummed along.
Even with some offensive struggles, Spears was noticed and pulled off some solid runs in the ground game and was a consistent outlet as a receiver.
By most accounts, the 49ers won the day, which was somewhat expected, but the Titans bounced back after some rocky moments, matched the intensity, and made some plays. There are still a lot of areas that must come together and grow, but for a young team on the road, this was a solid battle that will pay off as the team closes in on the season opener against the New York Jets. Robert Saleh and his staff will have a lot of coaching points to take from this.
The Titans and 49ers will get together again on Thursday in the preseason opener, in what could be a completely different outing. Robert Saleh plans to play everyone who is available, while San Francisco plans to rest the starters. This decision could have played into some of the intensity differences between the two teams in this practice on Tuesday, and will likely impact the overall feel of the game.
