The Tennessee Titans are about to kick off training camp in a couple of weeks and have some roster questions to answer. While some positions have clearly defined starters in place, others will have some fierce battles for both playing time and depth roles.

One position that matches that description is running back, where Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears appear entrenched as the Titans' top two running backs, but behind them there are some questions about depth and the long-term outlook for the position.

Pollard has been solid since signing with the Titans and has put up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. While he isn’t the most explosive or powerful running back in the league, he is consistent and appears to be the team's bell cow heading into the season.

When healthy, Spears provides a dynamic complement to Pollard, but has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and must stay healthy to make a significant impact. Entering camp, Spears is looking to build consistency and be available for the entire season.

With both Pollard and Spears entering the final year of their contracts, Tennessee will have to start evaluating its future. They did select Penn State running back Nick Singleton during the draft, and he looks to be a potential sleeper, but after missing most of the offseason recovering from a foot injury, he enters camp as an unknown.

Tennessee signed veteran Michael Carter, re-signed Julius Chestnut, and has second-year running back Kalel Mullings battling for depth roles as they enter camp, and it is likely that at least one of those will work their way into roster contention with their special teams play. Carter does have a history with head coach Robert Saleh and could have the inside track, but Mullings was drafted by general manager Mike Borgonzi and, if healthy, could prove to add a different skill set to the Titans’ backfield.
