Titans' Robert Saleh named one of the top playcallers in the NFL

The Tennessee Titans are one week into training camp, and the fingerprints of new head coach Robert Saleh can already be felt by all of the organization.

The Titans do still have some questions that must be answered in camp, but one thing is starting to look more certain by the day: the Titans’ defense will be much improved in 2026. Not only have the Titans improved the roster around Jeffery Simmons, they improved the braintrust with the additions of Saleh and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.

How much of an improvement was it? Zachary Pereles and the staff at CBS Sports looked at the defensive playcallers across the league and have Saleh clearly inside the top 10.

Saleh is back in the top gig after a second stint as 49ers defensive coordinator. Things fell apart in his first head-coaching job, with the Jets, but perhaps he is better prepared to succeed this time in Tennessee. Saleh's ability to get passable defense in San Francisco in 2025 despite multiple injuries was an impressive display of perseverance, ingenuity and adjusting on the fly.

While the defense has had some up-and-down moments during training camp, roster improvements and physicality have been visible in every session, and improvements are happening every day as the players become more familiar with the scheme. There is little doubt that the defense will be much improved in 2026, the only question is how much.
