The biggest question of this NBA offseason is where four-time NBA champion LeBron James will sign in free agency. He already confirmed he will not re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, which opened the door for the ultimate battle for the 24-season veteran.

Several teams have emerged as candidates to land James, like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors. But The Athletic’s David Aldridge has made a strong case for the Minnesota Timerberwolves to be the team to sign James this summer.

“Going to the Wolves is not nearly as sexy a story as a Last Dance for LeBron in Cleveland. Or a second stint on South Beach. Or giving the Sixers hope they could make magic in the Illadelph. I get it. I wanted James to finish with the Warriors, just because it would be fun for him to play with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and for Steve Kerr — all people he knows and likes.

“But in the absence of that, the best spot is Minnesota,” Aldridge wrote.

Timberwolves Already Have A Strong Core

One of the main reasons Aldridge is rooting for the Timberwolves to sign James is because Minnesota already has a strong core. And so, James would add to the team rather than carry it.

The Timberwolves acquired LaMelo Ball in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets after one of the strongest seasons of his career. Four-time NBA All-Star Anthony Edwards is also in the prime of his career, and four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert equips Minnesota with a dominant defense.

James’ agent Rich Paul said he is not chasing a ring in free agency. But joining the Timberwolves would give James a chance to end another championship drought for a new city. He helped Cleveland win its first NBA championship in 2016 and now could lead Minnesota to its first title in 2027.
