FORT MYERS, FL – The Detroit Tigers escaped an injury scare.
So did Spencer Torkelson.
Torkelson, the 26-year-old everyday first baseman, exited a simulated game Tuesday, March 10, at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida, after being hit by a pitch in the right forearm, but he was diagnosed with a contusion.
It's just a bruise.
"It was scary," manager A.J. Hinch said before Wednesday's game in Fort Myers, the second game of a two-day trip. "It's going to happen, whether it's a game or a practice game. From what I know, from afar, we've avoided anything major."

The right forearm contusion came on a fastball from right-handed reliever Burch Smith.
Torkelson left the simulated game with a trainer.
At the time, Hinch was managing the Tigers in Tuesday's 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers, more than 100 miles from Lakeland. He provided an update before Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins, also in Fort Myers.

Hinch reviewed the simulated game after Tuesday's victory in Grapefruit League play.
"I know Burch felt terrible that the pitch got away from him," Hinch said.

In 2025, Torkelson produced the best season of his four-year MLB career – hitting .240 with 31 home runs, 72 walks and 169 strikeouts across 155 games, registering a .789 OPS. He had career-best marks in batting average, walk rate and on-base plus slugging, while tying his career-high in home runs.
Now, Torkelson has avoided a serious injury after a hit by pitch in preparation for the 2026 season.
"Tork got evaluated and got tests done," Hinch said, "and everything came back as a contusion, so that's a good sign."
