Just as the Detroit Tigers look to get some reinforcements on the mound, the team suffered another pitching injury.
In the top of the third inning of the Tigers' game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, May 15, at Comerica Park, right-hander Ty Madden took a Yohendrick Piñango line drive off his right arm. He was examined by a team trainer for a minute before being taken out of the game, replaced by right hander Burch Smith.
Madden entered the game with two outs in the top of the second inning with the Tigers trailing, 2-0, following opener Brenan Hanifee and reliever Brant Hurter. Madden was expected to take up the bulk inning role against the Blue Jays.
Instead, the Tigers turned to their fourth pitcher of the game with only six outs recorded, disrupting manager A.J. Hinch's plans for the bullpen game.
Madden has a 2.38 ERA over 11⅓ innings pitched in 2026, making two previous appearances in bulk relief. We await updates from the team on his injury status.
