The Detroit Tigers are suddenly in the mix for first place in the American League Central. Despite selling off their best pitcher in Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline, Detroit is still built for October.
A big reason why is because the offense has thrived recently, and the most dangerous hitter in the lineup is outfielder Riley Greene.
The 25-year-old is one of the most underrated players in baseball. Across 116 games, Greene has posted a .273 batting average, .365 on-base percentage, .815 OPS, 16 home runs and 54 RBIs. He has earned three straight All-Star selections.

Unfortunately, Greene’s day came to an early end during Tuesday’s matchup with the Cleveland Guardians. During his first plate appearance, Greene was drilled right below his right knee in the shin and immediately fell to the ground in pain.
However, he eventually waved off the Tigers training staff, jogged to first base and even scored later in the inning.
When the Tigers took the field for the top of the third inning though, Greene was nowhere to be found. Instead, backup outfielder Ben Malgeri took over in his spot.
The Tigers later announced the reason for Greene’s exit. “Riley Greene is being evaluated after exiting the game due to right hamstring tightness,” the team wrote on X.
Manager A.J. Hinch will likely provide an update on the results of the evaluation after the game along with the severity of the issue. Given Greene’s importance to this club, the hope is that he does not end up on the 10-day injured list.
His next chance to return to the starting lineup will come Wednesday in another game against the Guardians, and with Detroit firmly in a division race, getting him back as quickly as possible is the organization’s top priority.
