Detroit — The line in the Tigers twice-weekly medical update said Jack Flaherty was completing rehab daily. Which meant he was not yet throwing. Which means his stay on the injured list might be a tad longer than initially thought.
“It’s what I thought it was,” Flaherty said of the inflammation in his right flexor tendon. “I thought I’d be throwing already and probably could be throwing already, but I guess (we’re) playing it slower than I thought. I thought I’d be throwing.”
Flaherty came out of his start at Wrigley Field on Tuesday after four innings and placed on the 15-day injured list the next day. The earliest he could be activated is Aug. 5. Flaherty said he expects to know by Tuesday when he’ll be able to resume throwing.
“That’s kind of how these things go,” he said. “I’m in a good spot. We’ll figure it out in the next couple of days.”
Manager AJ Hinch explained why Flaherty has yet to resume his throwing program.
“We’re not slow-playing it at all,” he said. “We’re being respectful to symptoms.”
The club’s medical staff is still collecting opinions from multiple doctors, Hinch said.
“We’re going to get those (opinions) together and make a more definitive plan,” he said. “We can’t really start until we get truly to the bottom of the injury.”
Logical, smart, but also a test of patience for a fierce competitor like Flaherty who had posted a 3-1 record and 2.12 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 10 walks in the six starts leading up to the start last week.
“Nobody likes missing time,” he said. “Just waiting for them to figure it out and then work on getting back as fast as we can.”
