Tiger Woods will not be the captain of the United States Ryder Cup team in the 2027 competition at Adare Manor.
The PGA of America announced Wednesday that Woods told the organization he was passing on the chance to captain the team in Ireland next year. He was considered the favorite in the clubhouse for the job and had been pondering the decision for months, though nothing had been announced publicly.
However, after Woods' arrest last Friday and his Tuesday announcement that he was stepping away and seeking treatment, the PGA of America is beginning the search in another direction.
"The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being," the statement says. "During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers, with sincere hope for his strength, comfort, and recovery. Tiger has meant to much to our Association and to the game of golf. Since his Ryder Cup debut in 1997, he has been an enduring part of the PGA of America family. His connection to our PGA of America Golf Professionals, and his lasting impact on the sport, have inspired generations and profoundly shaped the game.
"We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision. Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup Captaincy when appropriate."
Early last month, it was announced Luke Donald would return for a third stint as European Ryder Cup captain. About a week before, Woods was asked about the vacant position and was mum on how close he was to making a decision.
"Yeah, they have asked me for my input on it, and I haven't made my decision yet," Woods said at the Genesis Invitational. "I'm trying to figure out what we're trying to do with our tour. That's been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team, our Team USA and our players and everyone that's going to be involved in the Ryder Cup, if I can do it justice with my time."
With Woods' commitment to the PGA Tour on its Future Competition Committee, helping shape the PGA Tour schedule for 2027 and beyond, it's likely the PGA of America had a Plan B ready to go in case Woods decided he wasn't ready for his shot to captain the U.S. team.
Now, that plan comes to fruition.
