Dec. 13—MITCHELL — The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team wanted to tighten up the defense after the first quarter on Saturday.
It's fair to say a 29-3 margin in the second quarter did the job, as 14th-ranked DWU crushed the College of Saint Mary 96-41 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup at the Corn Palace.
DWU improved to 7-4 on the season and 5-2 in GPAC play, and now 4-0 in home games this season.
DWU coach Jason Christensen said the key was picking up its defensive intensity to cut off the Flames' ability to get to the basket, particularly stopping Jai'La Porter, who had eight points in the first five minutes and was held to only four points from that point onward.
"She was getting to the rim at will. We weren't doing a very good job and we were able to make a few adjustments and from that point on, I really liked our defense," Christensen said. "We did a great job of getting deflections and turning that into offense on the other end."
The Flames had no answer for the high-low offense that DWU was able to funnel to forwards Emma Yost and Avery Orth, who each had 16 points in the game. Yost had 11 points in the first half, as did Rylee Rosenquist, as DWU was 19-for-37 from the field and then took advantage of a stronger day getting to the free throw line, shooting 17-for-22 at the stripe.
The Flames, who only had nine players in uniform for Saturday's game, saw the offense fall off in the second quarter, as CSM was 1-for-13 from the field.
"We had a stretch of putting Emma and Avery out on the floor at the same time and they struggled with that," Christensen said. "I know we had Shalayne (Nagel) out there, we might have even had (Avery Broughton) in there too. We did a good job with our high-low game."
The lead was 54-18 at halftime and 76-29 after three quarters in DWU's favor. DWU finished with six players in double figures for scoring, led by Yost and Orth with 16 each, plus 13 from Rylee Rosenquist, 11 for Nagel and Maleighya Estes and 10 for Avery Broughton.
DWU finished with a 59-18 margin in rebounds, including 22 offensive rebounds to the Tigers' side, led by nine from Nagel, eight from Rosenquist and seven each for Broughton, Yost and Orth. The Tigers were able to play 17 players in the game and 11 of them found the scoring column in the win.
The Flames (3-11, 2-6 GPAC) were held to a season-low 41 points in the game and were led by 12 points each from Jai'La Porter and Haley Debuse. CSM finished shooting 32.7% from the field.
DWU will now head for warmer weather and the island of Hawaii for two games, starting with a matchup against Providence (Mont.) on Dec. 18 and Campbellsville (Ky.) on Dec. 19.
