Nov. 8—SEWARD, Neb. — The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team got back to defense and rebounding on Saturday.
The offense came along with it and the No. 9-ranked Tigers rolled No. 18 Arizona Christian on Saturday morning 82-58 to close their two-game run at the Cattle Classic at Concordia (Neb.) University with a split.
One day after mustering only 39 points in a loss to MidAmerica Nazarene on Friday, the Tigers had 39 points in the first half alone, including a 26-8 start to the game in the first quarter. That included a career-high 34 points from junior forward Emma Yost. The Wagner product was 13-for-19 from the field and finished 7-for-8 on free throws, with six rebounds.
Shalayne Nagel had 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Tigers. Avery Broughton finished with nine points and Rylee Rosenquist had seven points, seven rebounds and six steals in 20 minutes off the bench. Jaida Young was impressive, nearly scoring a double-double despite logging only one point. She had 13 rebounds and nine assists for the Tigers.
DWU forced 23 turnovers and only committed six of their own. The Tigers finished with 24 assists on 32 made baskets, outscored Arizona Christian 40-22 in the paint and 29-4 off turnovers. DWU handled the Firestorm on the rebounding front, recording 23 offensive rebounds and outrebounding Arizona Christian 51-34 overall.
Arizona Christian (0-4) had one player in double-figures for scoring with 14 points from Shaylynn De Yager off the bench.
DWU (2-1) will now face Hastings to open Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Nov. 15, with tip off scheduled for 2 p.m.
