(WJHL) – GATE CITY, Va. — Three-time defending NBA dunk champion and Gate City Native Mac McClung announced he will not be participating in this year’s contest.
The 27-year-old, a former Gate City High School standout, made history last year by becoming the first player to win three consecutive dunk contests. McClung captured titles during NBA All-Star Weekend in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Despite preparing for another appearance in recent months, McClung said he has decided to step away from this year’s competition. He added that the dunks he designed for the event will still be shared publicly following the contest.
McClung is currently playing with the Windy City Bulls, the G League affiliate of the Chicago Bulls, after previously spending time with the Indiana Pacers organization.
The 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend is scheduled for Feb. 13–15 in Los Angeles at the Intuit Dome, home of the LA Clippers. The dunk contest is set for Saturday night, though no participants had been officially announced as of the weekend.
