MANCHESTER – The Portsmouth Little League 10-12 all-star team will play for the District II championship on Saturday, July 25, after a 7-4 win over top-seeded North Manchester/Hooksett on Wednesday, July 22.
"The boys stayed composed and strung together good at-bats when we needed them most," Portsmouth manager Charley Raizes said. "Dreyton (Srimouksavanh) continued to battle on the mound when faced with some adversity and was able to help prevent a comeback. We're excited for the opportunity to compete for a district championship."
Portsmouth will face the winner of Thursday's game between North Manchester/Hooksett and Concord in the championship. The championship game will be played at Charles Dwinell Park in Tilton at 10 a.m.
After a scoreless first inning, Portsmouth broke through in the second when Sam Carter and Ryder Raizes each singled, and Joey Coakley added a third single to right field to score the game's first two runs.
Portsmouth erupted for five runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Srimouksavanh led off with a single, and two walks loaded the bases for Carter, who delivered an RBI infield single. Ryder Raizes followed with a two-run single to left field, and Bennett Smith added a two-run hit of his own to extend Portsmouth's lead to 7-0.
North Manchester/Hooksett scored four runs over the final two innings, but Portsmouth's pitching and defense held firm to secure the victory.
Srimouksavanh allowed four runs on four hits over five innings to earn the win. Drew Cresta pitched the final inning for the save.
Ryder Raizes and Carter each had two hits, while Raizes, Smith and Coakley drove in two runs apiece.
Portsmouth's 9-11 all-star team punched its ticket to the state championship game with a 6-1 extra-inning victory over Mount Monadnock on July 22.
Portsmouth will face Salem in the state championship game on July 25 at Michele Memorial Park at 10 a.m.
"Our kids never stopped believing," Portsmouth manager Matt Larrabee said. "They stayed patient, trusted each other and came through with big at-bats. It was a complete team win."
Mount Monadnock took a 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth inning, but Portsmouth answered in the sixth.
Adrian Morin singled and later scored on a hit by Pavol Tishchenko to tie the game at 1-1 and force extra innings.
Portsmouth broke the game open with five runs on four hits in the seventh, highlighted by Drew Larrabee's two-run single.
Dougie McCafferty struck out three over the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the win. Larrabee held Mount Monadnock hitless over the first 3 1/3 innings.
Larrabee finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Cody Shultz drew two walks. Tyler Ross, Julian Serrano, Aidan O'Brien, Aiden Cole, James Coughenour and Morin each added a hit.
Portsmouth's 8-10 all-star team earned a 12-1 District II semifinal victory over the Lamprey River Longhorns.
Portsmouth will face Concord in the championship game on July 25 at Charles Dwinell Memorial Field in Northfield. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"I continue to be proud of the way these boys come together and play," Portsmouth manager Matt LaFleur said. "We got hits top to bottom, threw strikes, played outstanding defense and stayed aggressive on the bases."
Ian Pearl and Elliot Gray combined to hold Lamprey River to just one run.
Jack McLean had two hits and two RBIs for Portsmouth, while Gray added two hits and JD Longley drove in two runs
