8:10 p.m. ET: The Toronto Blue Jays suffered a tough loss on Saturday, getting blown out by the Seattle Mariners 11-0 on the July 4 (U.S.) holiday.

The loss dropped the Jays to 42-47 and 3.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot in the American League, but the day wasn't all bad, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was announced as the starter at first base for the American League All-Star team. Louis Varland and Dylan Cease are also going to the Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia.

For Guerrero, it's his sixth All-Star Game appearance. He'll join Ernie Clement as starters for the AL. Clement was the top vote getter and will start at second base, giving Toronto four representatives.

It's been a disappointing season overall for Guerrero, so there are questions about if he really deserves this honor, but in a world of fan voting, those concerns don't matter much.

After Saturday's loss, the 27-year-old is hitting a respectable .265, however he has only four home runs and 35 RBIs. He's got a .346 on-base percentage and an OPS of .692.

He's hitting only .220 in his last 30 games with one home run.

Regardless of how this season has been, it's been a remarkable young career for Guerrero. In eight seasons, he's a six-time All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger, a Gold Glover and an ALCS MVP. He was the driving force behind the Blue Jays offense in their World Series run a season ago.

Cease helped the Blue Jays to a game one win in Seattle, twirling seven scoreless frames with nine strikeouts on Friday night. He leads the American League in strikeouts at 137 and has an ERA of 2.79. In his first year in Toronto, he's on pace for his sixth straight season of 30 starts and 200 strikeouts or more.

As for Varland, he's been a true revelation in the bullpen, taking over for Jeff Hoffman as the team's closer. Though he's just 3-3, he has a 0.96 ERA, striking out 65 batters in 47.0 innings.

He has a WHIP of just 0.957.

The All-Star Game is July 13 at Citizens Bank Park.
