Jul. 20—MITCHELL — A number of Mitchell-based youth baseball teams took aim at a South Dakota Class A state title over the weekend at the Cadwell Sports Complex in Mitchell.

Out of the 60 total teams on hand competing in six state brackets, three Mitchell teams finished in third place in their respective divisions.

The Mitchell Sliders were 3-0 in pool play in the Lower Sixth Grade division, including a 13-7 win over Aberdeen Smittys Grey on Friday, 3-2 win over Brandon Valley White and a 16-1 win over the Yankton Heat on Saturday. The Sliders took the No. 2 seed into Sunday's semifinals and faced Brookings Black. Brookings had the upper hand on Sunday, picking up a 12-2 win over the Sliders to leave the Mitchell squad with third place.

In the Fifth Grade Lower division, the Mitchell Maize had a 6-5 loss to the Sioux Falls Cubs before bouncing back with a 5-3 win over Harrisburg on Friday and a 6-4 win over Tea on Saturday. They earned the No. 3 seed into the four-team championship bracket and faced Harrisburg in the semifinals on Sunday. Harrisburg claimed the semifinal matchup 14-9 to leave the Maize claiming third place.

The Mitchell Maize squad in the Third Grade Lower division also finished third in its bracket. Mitchell lost its opener 12-7 on Friday before winning 2-1 over the Yankton Riverbats and 12-10 over Brookings Red on Saturday. Mitchell advanced with a fewer runs allowed tiebreaker to claim the No. 4 seed, facing Harrisburg Donnelly, which downed Mitchell 12-1 on the way to an eventual state title.

Mitchell Sun Gold Sports landed in fifth place in its Lower Sixth Grade division. The team went 2-1 in pool play, which included an 8-7 win over the Sioux Empire League Stars on Friday, a 13-3 loss to Brookings Black and an 8-5 win over Huron on Saturday. That was enough to advance them to the quarterfinals on Sunday, where they faced Tea, which won the playoff matchup 12-2, slotting Mitchell SGS into fifth place.

Here's a look at how the rest of the Mitchell squads fared on the diamonds this weekend:

* The sixth-grade Mitchell Avengers team finished 1-2, with a 6-2 win over Brookings Red and a 9-2 loss to Tea on Friday before falling 17-0 against the Pierre Cobras to cap pool play.
