Three Livingston County boys lacrosse players who were second-team all-state selections last season have moved up to the first team this year.
Junior goalie Nate Anderer and senior midfielder Clayton Penzien of Hartland, along with junior attack Joey Skoczylas of Brighton are the only first-teamers as chosen by the Michigan High School Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Anderer and Skoczylas were among Michigan’s 21 All-America selections.
Penzien has 42 goals, 40 assists and 45 ground balls to finish second in scoring for the Eagles. He had 113 goals and 89 assists in three seasons, helping Hartland reach the state championship game as a sophomore by scoring twice in a semifinal victory over Birmingham Brother Rice.
Anderer made a name for himself as a freshman when he backstopped Hartland to a victory over Brother Rice in the state semifinals. He’s been a rock for three seasons between the pipes for the Eagles, who will have him for one more season. Anderer helped Hartland hold opponents to five goals or less in 13 of its 22 games and to single digits 18 times. He stopped 63.6% of the shots he faced.
Skoczylas has been Brighton’s offensive MVP the last two seasons. His 91 goals this season rank third in school history behind John Aurandt’s 102 in 2021 and 94 in 2022. Skoczylas had 22 assists and 43 ground balls. He has 166 goals and 48 assists with one season remaining.
Skoczylas is one of six Brighton players who received all-state recognition and will return next season.
Junior Brody Shannon made the second team on defense. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Rocco Parisi and junior short-stick midfielder Owen Brozo made the third team. Sophomores Maddox Marlatt (attack) and Luke Blow (midfielder) received honorable mention.
Making the second team for Hartland were junior attack Coen Chwalek, senior midfielder Connor Gilbert and senior faceoff specialist Kellan Hull. Junior defender Jaxon DeLaBarre made the third team.
Receiving academic all-state for Brighton were Austin Kulesza, Caden Freimark and Lucas Eiola. Hartland players to earn academic all-state were Derek Janis, DeLaBarre, Anderer and Chwalek.
Freimark was also an academic All-American.
