If Hartland ever took winning KLAA boys lacrosse championships for granted, that mentality ceased one year ago.
The Eagles came away with no KLAA hardware for the first time since 2016 when their 76-game league winning streak ended last season with a 9-7 loss to Brighton.
Hartland waited a year to exact revenge on a Brighton team that lost only one this season, scoring the first nine goals in a decisive 14-6 victory on Wednesday, May 6.
The Eagles won the KLAA West championship and earned a berth in the KLAA title game against Plymouth at 7 p.m. Monday, May 11 at Hartland.
“(Revenge) was obviously a factor,” Hartland coach Steven Petersen said. “It had been a while since we lost a conference title. Last year was just a bitter loss, one that they earned. It definitely felt a little bit better tonight coming away wit that win, sort of avenging that, especially for some of our seniors. This time of year, it’s a game you just have to have.”
After a 1-4 start against a challenging nonleague schedule, Hartland has won 10 straight games. But Petersen is still looking for more from his team with the state tournament two weeks away.
“We’ve been getting better incrementally through the year,” Petersen said. “Frankly, we haven’t put four quarters of lacrosse together and keeping our foot on the gas in game where we have success offensively or defensively. We’re string to play complementary lacrosse. Small stretches of minutes seem to stand in our way of doing that. We’re not quite where we need to be. We’ve seen glimpses of it. We’re getting there; it still feels a little way off.”
Connor Gilbert had three goals and three assists, while Clayton Penzien and Coen Chwalek each had four goals to lead Hartland. Trevor Phillips had two goals, while Drew Schaecher had a goal and one assist. Jackson DeLaBarre caused five turnovers and picked up six ground balls for the Eagles.
Joey Skoczylas had three goals for Brighton (12-2).

Northville and eighth-ranked Salem are tied atop the West at 9-1, followed by Howell at 7-3.
